Once casting for the How to Train Your Dragon Arena Spectacular was completed, the cast got a chance to go behind the scenes at Creature Technologies (the company that built all the animatronic dragons and puppets) to meet their dragon costars that they’ll be performing with. These photos were all taken around the November 2011 timeframe in Australia.

Here we see the principal Viking players posing with the very large Gronckle and Deadly Nadder animatronic dragons. In the center is Jeffrey Katzenberg of DreamWorks. On the left is Sarah McCreanor and Riley Miner and on the right is Gemma Nguyen and Rarmian Newton. Riley and Rarmian share the role of Hiccup in the show and Sarah and Gemma share the role of Astrid. (Because of the extreme physicality of the principal roles, two actors are needed for both Hiccup and Astrid.)

The location is the largest sound stage in Australia which served as the rehearsal space for the show. This was the only place they could rehearsal which was large enough (outside an actual arena). The scale of the show is truly amazing. This photo was taken during a media event where they introduced the principal cast and showed off the very large Gronckle dragon for the first time. Take a look on the right side and see what’s covered in dark red. Know what that is? It’s the Toothless animatronic dragon which they weren’t ready to show off to the press at this point.

Here’s another photo of Jeffrey that shows just how big the Gronckle and Deadly Nadder dragons really are. It’s safe to say that no matter where you’ll be sitting in the arena that you’ll definitely be able to see these guys when they come on stage!

Here a nice photo of the Gronckle dragon stopping to pose for the media. Somehow these guys grew a lot larger than they were in the movie!

This is Rarmian Newton, one of two actors who portray Hiccup in the show, cautiously approaching the Gronckle for the first time. Is he friendly? I guess we’ll have to see the show to find out.

Here we see Rarmian Newton (Hiccup) and Sarah McCreanor (Astrid) saying hello to the large Deadly Nadder dragon.

Sarah and Rarmian visited Creature Technologies to check in on some of their other dragon costars. In this shot they’re having fun with and Egg Biter puppet. Just look at all the detail they put into these dragons.

Here Sarah says hello to a smaller Gronckle that I believe will be seen flying around the arena space.

And finally we see Rarmian posing with an Egg Biter dragon.
